Guest Not a society member. Nine of the forty are guests. They play their matchplay as normal and their points count towards the Cup, but of the prizes they can only win longest drive, closest to the pin and, if they are eligible for it, the Wooden Spoon. Members are eligible for everything.

Tee times. Four a group, ten minutes apart, from 2:30 to 4:00 PM. Two matches a group.

How the sides were split. The field was ranked by handicap and dealt out to give two level sides, then players and handicaps were traded in place as they firmed up. Home now averages 20.85, Away 20.10.

The Cup. Twenty singles matches, a point for a win and a half each for a half. 10½ of 20 takes the Cup.

Everybody plays eighteen. A match result stands the moment it is decided — 3 & 2 is 3 & 2 — but nobody picks up and nothing is conceded. Play out all eighteen and hand in a full card, because the same round feeds the Stableford.

The Wooden Spoon. Running alongside the Cup, every player’s net Stableford points are totted up over the eighteen, and the lowest total takes the Wooden Spoon. Twelve of the forty are out of it — eight guests out for their first outing of the year, and four who have already won.

Shots. The full difference between the two handicaps, taken on the hardest holes first.
